McCarthy's Coal Shop
27 Tyne Street
The site now occupied by McCartys was originally an outdoor yard and alleyway. Early photographs of the harbour area clearly show this, along with an arched doorway providing access to the neighboring building.
The exact date of construction of the current building is not known, but it is thought to have been built around 1900. The building was constructed in several stages, which is evident internally, as each bay is built slightly differently. The Tyne Street façade is constructed of Oamaru stone.
Coal was delivered to the building via the railway tracks on Harbour Street until the early 1990s
Until 2025 the building was mostly used as a storage area for the Trust
Trust History
McCarthy's was purchased by the Trust 2002 from the McCarthy family for $28,000. at this point the building was converted into a stable to be used for a carriage driving business.
Recent Projects
In 2025, the Trust undertook an ambitious programme of work to make the building usable and accessible to the public. The upper floor was converted into a small function space, a retail shop was added, and the former manager’s office was renovated and repurposed as a leasable space.
